House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to depart for Asia on Friday, beginning a diplomatic trip with the potential of upsetting the Chinese Communist Party.

Pelosi is scheduled to visit several allied Asian countries during her multi-day tour of the continent.

One possible destination with major ramifications is Taiwan — officially known as the Republic of China. The island has been expecting a visit from Pelosi, but recent threats from the People’s Republic of China have drawn global attention to the potential visit.

At a Capitol Hill press conference on Friday, Pelosi declined to clarify her plans for the trip, citing security issues.

“Well, I don’t ever talk about my travel, because as some of you know, it’s a security issue,” the speaker said. “It’s a security issue for every member of Congress traveling — especially abroad. But for the speaker, it is an additional security issue, and for those traveling with me, not just members, but staff, et cetera.”

The Ryder Cup’s record points scorer Sergio Garcia is reportedly getting ready to quit the European Tour (now DP World Tour) and therefore the Ryder Cup.

The Guardian’s golf correspondent Ewan Murray reported that Garcia told Spanish media that ‘he will be quitting the European Tour (therefore Ryder Cups).’

“My resignation is not official, but I’m going to make it effective,” Garcia is reported to have told Spanish media, adding: “What they are doing is a shame because the European Tour is going to become the fifth in the world .”

By fifth in the world, Garcia perhaps means that the DP World Tour would fall behind the PGA Tour, LIV, the Asian Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour.

Anchorage resident’s around-the-world adventure is a travel lover’s dream job

13/07/2022 Author 0

Cella Baker landed in Anchorage recently after a remarkable round-the-world adventure. Although she did not technically circumnavigate the globe, she certainly did not sit still making her way from country to country.

“I’ve been to 140 countries,” she said. “The first thing I do is learn how to say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ in the local language. On this trip, I think we went to 46 countries.”

Baker’s journey started last November in Aruba. She had been hired by Oceania Cruises to work on a round-the-world cruise. But the ship, the Insignia, was laid up during the COVID pandemic. Part of her job was to get it ready to sail again.

“We were channeling Jules Verne,” she said. “But instead of going around the world in 80 days, we added another 100 days.”

The Insignia, built in 1999, is 594 feet long and holds 656 passengers and 400 crew members. After her retrofit in Aruba, the ship sailed to New York to pick up its first passengers on Dec. 21, 2021.

Baker’s job aboard the ship is a “Oceania Club Ambassador.”
